While I totally feel you on this, I've had nightmares about the Minmay defense barrier, I think this was handled a little better. Its not quite so in your face and the song was nice.

But yeah, hope they don't take it too far. Infact I thought there would be more singing than there has been just because of Inori's position as an idol.

Well, Macross made a big deal out of it because it represented something larger than a convenient way to get song into the story. It was all about culture being the reason to live and defend yourself as well as not fight your own kin. I don't think Macross would be the same without song. Here, I think they're using it to sell figurines.

Feeling the need to prove yourself to the group you just joined is too common a theme in anime. It'd be just 'like' all the other shounen anime running around.

This show has been getting some serious hate on 4chan, and I don't see why. None of its flaws are any more pronounced than in a lot of other series. Characters are pretty stock, really, and the story and plot are a little jumbled right now but there's nothing awful. Fights are decent and seeing as it's I.G. it looks great.
