Ok, so I finally got around to reading the last couple chapters of volume 1 (I'm not going to post any spoilers). It turns out that Sword Art Online was originally written to be only one volume. The end of the first volume has a conclusive ending to the story. The author originally just posted the story online in 2002 for anyone to read. Over the years it became more and more popular and people wanted more. It was then published as volume 1 in 2009, volume 2 is just side stories to volume 1, and volume 3 continues the story from the end of volume 1. So the author just thought up a way to continue the story. I wouldn't be surprised if the anime only covers volume 1. In the novel they didn't even cover the first boss fight like the anime did, they only briefly reference back to it as the time that Kirito met Asuna. Since the first volume is pretty long, I wouldn't be surprised if they could get two seasons (24 episodes) out of just the first volume.
