The second book is just some background/side stories that the first didn't cover in depth, the anime is still at the very beginning of the first book.

They are at the moment in the 2 year time skip period and going through the side stories that happen in that time frame which are handled in the second book.

Not so much dying, their bodies are just kind of deteriorating from not being used, like they're losing all their muscle since they aren't using them at all. Their bodies are in a hospital on a bed made of a special gel that prevents infections to the skin and breaks down disposed bodily waste. They're probably fed through a tube, though that wasn't mentioned in the book.

in the first novel there is a 2 year time skip, the second novel consists of side stories happening in that timeframe. So at the moment they BURN through the second novel like crazy, I think there is only 1 left... after that they should continue with the main story which happens after the 2 years time skip
