No I think that the zanpakuto acts only as catalyst so that the spirit can manifest themselves as a weapon outside of their shinigami soul. Of course this does raise the question about a damaged bankai, if bankai can't be repaired why not get a new asauchi and start over again. Well perhaps when a zanpakuto spirit merges with an asauchi they become joined and can not be so readily separated, the fact that no shinigami so far as switched out his zanpakuto seems to be proof of this.
