I thought it was because he'd rather have friends then a girlfriend. Having a girlfriend and choosing one of them over the others would change the group dynamic. Hell all those awkward times when he keeps saying "This is good for when we get friends" is, to me, indictive of how he would rather have the group stay the same. Not to mention if he had friends the group would no longer need to have the club room.

Just my thoughts though :p
