Yeah, while I've not read the VN, I've played the game multiple times. Its not a good way to die. Ever.

For myself, I'll admit that I liked the sex and romance that F/SN had. the way it was handled and the mechanics behind it seemed natural (for lack of a better word) they didn't seem shoe horned in. However, the story was that of a boy and the girls who helped him. Blossoming love is a real thing so that direction worked. However, I really couldn't say at this point who the main character if Fate/zero is. As such not having the boy/girl defined situation I'm not finding myself missing the sex/romance. I'm just much more interested in seeing how the current events build up to the background information as presented in F/SN.

And you say you miss the sex, it sounds to me like you did read the VN, are you sure you're not just mistakenly thinking that the game you played and the VN are two separate things when they're actually the same?

Right. Visual Novel. Not light novel. Which are two different things. My bad, I do sometimes get them confused. But yeah. The visual novel which is playing the game, which I have done multiple times.

Important stuff omitted from this episode would be Kirei actually crying when he found his father's body, and remembering the last time he cried which was when his wife died.

Also Tokiomi thinking to himself about Sakura and how he didn't just give her to the Matou because it'd increase his family's chance of reaching the Root like he said to Kariya. He also did it to protect her because he could only choose one successor to train and if Sakura was left as a muggle the Mage's association might've taken her and kept her in formaldehyde as a research specimen because of her rare magical properties.

Good lord, she looks like she's about to die any minute now.

We always knew that Tokiomi dies, and I wasn't surprised at the guy who did it, but that was just so unsatisfying. I was hoping he would bite it in some big battle and actually have an impact.

I don't think they showed it in the KnK movies but he dueled Touko in the LN and flame magecraft was his specialty. Also despite his looks he was over 50 years old in KnK so his age could fit with him having been active at the time of this flashback.
