There was a side story chapter.

A survey corp girl was separated from her unit in a forest. Alone scared and knew she was going to die, then a titan showed up, a smaller one.

She accepted her death, but the titan didn't eat her. It stared at her and did nothing. The girl tried talking to it, and this titan talked back...it said Ymir-sama. Eventually the girl pissed the titan off and got eaten, but the fact remained that this titan was a follower of Ymir.

See I like your explanation better. I asked some other forums and they told me "because since both Eren and Ape Titan seem to have the 'power' AND pointy ears, Ymir must have the 'power' too because she also has pointy ears."

I dont know if I buy either explanation though. Ymir seems to be able to recall all of her 60 years as a Titan and Im sure she wouldve used the "power" during her fight at the tower considering how bad she was losing.
