My standards for anime? Staying true to the source material. If something changes too much, it's a completely different anime to me. This sort of explains why I have problems with TTGL, Yugioh manga, Tenchi Muyo, that Blade of the Immortal anime, and more obscure references you haven't heard of or don't care about. My point is, for an anime you like, if you liked something specific about it, and something changed so drastically that it felt completely different, my standard is anime that doesn't do that. CLANNAD DID THIS TOO. You're allowed to like it after it changed, but to me, it's just not the same. It's like comparing Full Metal Panic to Fumoffu, someone has to get that reference, or a non anime reference, the people that like Evil Dead 2 more than Evil Dead when they're so different. Does this answer your question?

To keep it short, it's hard to write them off as "evil" in the same way we would use it for other humans. Monsters, something frightening and beyond what our logic would dictate, describes them better.
