Re: /g/eneral Chat Version FOREVER: you cannot kill that which has no life
For one, I think your use of the DEM concept is slightly wrong. Second, the logical progression of a narrative that happens to end in a positive manner is an asspull? If your idea of creativity means that they go for the "they don't win the money (or whatever else is going on in the movie)", that gives us a grand total of 2 possibilites of how the movie could or should end. Some creativity.
EDIT: Why's it all hinge on the ending, anyhow? It can be satisfying either way, more often times than not when it is indeed a happy ending, as it were, if you've grown to like the characters, the story and the ideas at work. You cannot dismiss the entirety of the movie based on "well, happy endings just suck and they're unoriginal".

Evangelion doesn't have a happy ending
neither does Cowboy Bebop
or Ergo Proxy

Re: /g/eneral Chat Version FOREVER: you cannot kill that which has no life
Because, most of the time, the point of these movies is about "not giving up". The plot of the story revolves around the struggles the group has to go through and receiving the fruits of said struggle in the end. It's not really about happy endings but rather the message behind these kind of movies.Evokanu9000 wrote:talking about movies why isn't there a movie where a group of people need money for what ever reason, enter a competition to get it but lose. I can't stand those movies because you know at the end of the day they will win. I know it's about how they that makes the movie but having them lose would be so refreshing.

If that implication was incorrect, then what the hell was your point?

I find it a cliche that has been used to death, how about making a movie with likable characters that are put in to a wining situation and don't win. It would be like curve ball plus as I said before the the ride to defeat can be funny and entertaining. This means that people will enjoy the journey and then get surprised by the ending.
well done

Not really. People who watch characters they really like and can even relate that go through all this hell then just to fail in the won't get good backlash. Could it work for certain storylines? Sure. Would be a surprising they just fail in the end? Yes, but in no way shape or form would that be a good thing by default.

What movies/tv shows/games need to do is make you care enough about the characters so that you WANT them to win. So that way it doesn't feel cliche'd when they do.

It would be different, yes some people will be pissed of but some will relate to it.

I'm saying that DEM is terrible since it concludes a story in a rather illogical way. It's a way of the author doing an asspull at the last moment by interfering with the character/setting in order to draw a conclusion with a happy ending. I'm not saying that happy endings are bad, but it's the way it's presented. I'll give an example:
Let's say that there's an army that contains about 500 people and another army that has well over 10,000 troops. The 500 are dead except for one more and the 10,000 is still strong. That one guy is about to die and there is no escape. However, something happens. A gust of wind or a sandstorm or for some reason every soldier in the 10,000 group begins to spontaneously combust. Then that one guy survives and he lives happily ever after.
First, It's a way of meddling with fate in order to appeal to a certain character/side of the story. Second, the audience is attached to the character and they know that the guy is going to die. So they become frightened and pessimistic about what it's going to happen next. However, when the DEM appears, expectations are shattered and disappointment ensues. Thirdly, DEM gives no explanation as to why it happens. It just comes and goes. No one questions it.
Of course, there are two types of people who watches this situation: Those who are disappointed by the ending and those that just go along with it as "logical" and rather enjoy it (a concept called Suspension of Disbelief).
anyway, tl'dr blahblahblahblah. WASTED MY TIME TYPING THIS. BLAH BLAH BLAH.

She was pretty nice giving me a mulligan on the parallel parking. It was at an odd spot near the curb she told me to do it on.
