PROFESSIONS
Engineer
Masters of mechanical mayhem, engineers tinker with explosives, gadgets, elixirs, and all manner of deployable devices. They can take control of an area by placing turrets, support their allies with alchemic weaponry, or lay waste to foes with a wide array of mines, bombs, and grenades.
Thief
A master of stealth and surprise, the thief is deadly in single combat particularly when catching enemies off guard. Thieves compensate for their relatively low armor and health by being quick and evasive. They can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Enemies should watch their backs, or the thief will watch it for them.
Guardian
The guardian is a devoted fighter who calls upon powerful virtues to smite enemies and protect allies. As dangerous with a staff as he is with a mighty two handed hammer, a true guardian is a master tactician who knows when to sacrifice his own defenses to empower his allies to achieve victory.
Necromancer
A necromancer is a practitioner of the dark arts who summons the dead, wields the power of lost souls, and literally sucks the lifeblood of the enemy. A necromancer feeds on life force, which he can use to bring allies back from the brink or cheat death itself.
Ranger
The ranger is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of them all as well, relying on his keen eye, steady hand, or the power of nature itself. A master of ranged combat, the ranger is capable of striking unwitting foes from a distance with his bow. With a stable of pets at his command, a ranger can adapt to his opponents' strengths and weaknesses.
Warrior
The warrior is a master of weapons who relies on speed, strength, toughness, and heavy armor to survive in battle. A warrior can shrug off blow after blow to stay in the fight, all the while building up adrenaline to fuel his offense.
Elementalist
The elementalist channels natural forces of destruction, making fire, air, earth, and water do her bidding. What the elementalist lacks in physical toughness, she makes up for in her ability to inflict massive damage in a single attack, dropping foes from a distance before they can become a threat. Yet, despite her incredible offensive potential, versatility is what makes the elementalist truly formidable.
???
Many speculate that the 8th profession will be the Mesmer from the original Guild Wars, but it is still unknown at this point as to what it could be.
1. Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG: This is an MMO as in no instances. Yes, GW1 had instances, but this is a totally different game, the world is open to everyone to explore, so this game is actually considered an MMO unlike the original Guild Wars
2. Dynamic Events: These are events that have essentially replaced the 'questing' dynamic that most common MMO's have. Basically you will be exploring the open world, and suddenly an event will pop up, you can either go participate in that event, or you can simply ignore it, its up to you. However, if the event continues to go on, it will not simply disappear. Each dynamic event has a set of steps it goes through depending on how players react. If a band of pirates takes over a village, it will remain theirs until players come in and recapture the village. There will be scouts in towns that can point you in the direction that something MAY be occurring if you need to have help finding events.
3. 10 Skill set bars: Guild Wars 1 had an 8 skill set bar in which you could mix and match whatever you wanted on it to create your builds. In GW2, they decided to split the skills up in order to prevent some builds from being better than others. This chart best describes how skills are broken down:
So as shown in the chart, the skill 1-5 is used as your WEAPON skills, skill 6 is your HEAL skill, skill 7-9 are your UTILITY skills, and skill 0 (10) is your ELITE skill.
4. Guild Wars 2 is a BUY TO PLAY game: This means, you purchase the game once, and play it forever. THERE ARE NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES!!! And even better, yes there will be a cash shop, but the only plans for the cash shop are strictly COSMETIC!
5. There are quests, but only for individuals: Basically, there is a story line quest mode. It is completely optional, but if you want to understand what is going on in your world, it is highly recommended. It is a chain of quests that will take you through instanced dungeons, give you great rewards, and even effect an instance built JUST FOR YOU in your home town. In every races capital city, there is a section of the town dedicated for your character which will be affected by actions you make in the world and in your personal story quest line.
6. World vs. World vs. World PvP and other forms of PvP: They haven't released a huge amount of information on this yet, but what we do know is that they plan on pinning up 3 servers to take each other on in one MASSIVE map with several fortresses and what not...sort of like this leaked INCOMPLETE map:
GW2 has serveral types of pvp.
Structure PvP is based in an arena for teams from 1v1 to 10v10 using a variant of battlefields conquest game mode. This is designed for highly competitive team play. This uses its own server system in the background, which can be accessed from any server you're on. Think of it like loading into a map in a FPS. Structured pvp is also a place where everyone is on an even footing with all skills, and items unlocked for use.
World PvP is different. Every 2 weeks (tho they're tweaking this now), 3 servers of similar skill level will be matched up. Each server has a home map (a large zone in the world), with a central zone for all 3 servers. Players compete for resources, and major defensive positions such as mines, lumber mills, villages and castles. For example, if you capture a mine and are able to escort a caravan of supplies to a local outpost, you gain access to siege weapons for use against enemy positions.
At the end of the 2 weeks the server which win is granted server wide bonuses, and the server match up is redone with another 3.... and so on :)
If you wish, you can play nothing but World PvP and level up your character from 0 to max without touching pve.
... there is also an additional minigame style pvp available in various towns around the world.
Well said!
If you would like to learn more about their other forms of PvP that are to come, please refer to this article on GW2's official website:
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/pvp/pvp-overview/
7. Leveling will be simple and NOT grindy: Basically after about level 20, level advancement will be the same amount of XP per level. So say it takes 10,000 XP to go from level 20 to 21, level 21 to 22 should take the exact same amount of experience to reach. If you are one of those people who does not care for PvE, you can actually level a character from 1 to 80 (the level cap is set for 80) in the World PvP zone without ever stepping foot in the PvE zones. They also have a system called 'sidekicking' so that if you are level 40 and your level 20 friend would like to tag along, it kicks them up to your level when you fight in that particular zone so that you are not constantly having to revive them as you go.
8. The 'holy trinity' is what you make of it: One thing they have been stating over and over again, is that the holy trinity no longer exists. What they are trying to say is that everyone can HEAL and everyone can TANK and everyone can DPS. They did this to eliminate the need to search for a particular profession or build in order to get a group together to do an instance/dungeon. They created the game so that you could easily go into a dungeon with 5 Elementalists, and still be able to get out safe and sound without any problems. This doesn't mean that those who are attached to the 'holy trinity' still cant make a group of Heals, DPS, and Tank. There are support classes and heavy armored classes that can easily step in and act the role. You are just not limited by silly constraints b/c of which profession you choose.
9. Skills cost no energy and are earned based on use of skills: So in order to make their dodging mechanic more effective, they decided to allow all skills to cost 0 energy and instead all of your energy bar will only deplete as you use your dodging mechanics. Dodging is used by either double tapping a direction key or by clicking a dodge button on your skill bar.
Skills are earned by using your weapon. Each weapon had differnet skills, so in order to gain those skills, you must simply use the weapon. When you switch weapons, and go back to the original weapon, your skills will still be there. So as you use your first skill say, 10 times, you will unlock your second skill. Keep using your weapon, and you will eventually unlock all of the skills. They did this so you aren't constantly running back to a trainer in order to purchase new skill upgrades.
10. The game will be released WHEN ITS READY!: This means, when they feel the game is ready, they will release it. Simple enough. Any 'leaked' release dates you may have heard about, they are false or just place holders, not even arenanet knows when they will be releasing the game. The plan is to have a closed beta by the end of 2011, and based on feedback from closed beta, they will have an open beta. Then based off feedback from the open beta, they will finally go into release.

Re: [PC] Guild Wars 2: Charrlie Plushie Edition
you actually can't even put the first GW on the same level as what GW2 will be. there were so many limitations in GW, its almost embarrassing that people tried to call it an MMO...it wasn't. GW2 on the other hand is. and b/c of that, its going to be ridiculously good!

I wouldn't really call a server approach being able to be called "like WoW" but at least it seems like I would enjoy it more.
But I'm not into mmo's anymore.

From the media I've seen on this game it really interests me, but the day that I buy a MMO on launch is the day that hell freezes over.
TL;DR, Interested, will probably buy when cheap.

well since its not subscription based, just buy it once and its yours for life, you won't be losing any money off of it. and trust me, the game won't be going cheap for at least 3 years after launch. they are gonna need every penny they make to maintain them servers.
