Well they aren't humans.

They're artificially descended from humans with a significant number of Naked mole-rat genes inserted into their DNA to the point where a vaguely upright stance, communication and and mental faculties are about the only thing they share with the humans they originated from. They're long past being the same species as Homo sapiens.

As for the other "Mole-rat variants" aside from the ones camoflaged as humans I'm really not sure what was going on there.

The Blowdogs, swimming bombs, frog guys and leaf guys.

If they originated from Queerats then they still aren't the same species as Queerats any more than Queerats are the same species as humans, they're further from it if anything.

That whole thing confuses me actually because unless this was something covered in the novel, the Queerats never showed any actual means of being able to manipulate biology like that so I think it's far more likely that those guys are the result of cantus leakage like the stuff in Tokyo.

I think that's just a stylistic thing to differentiate him, but he really does look completely different, he has fur and a mouth full of canine teeth lol.

I thought it would've been kind of cool if they weren't the only smart animals. I thought Kiro was a wolf at first and that the story was going to introduce other animals like something like princess mononoke animals but that would've taken away from the main story of the rat uprising. Still would've been cool though.
