Well you just proved you don't know shit. Gameplay has nothing to do with a game being genuine horror. What matters, however, is the way each game handles its material. There is "horror" and there is "startling". I must have made this point a billion times before, but shit that jumps at you or makes you watch as it parades its gore-infested monsters and scenery is not "scary". It lulls you into a false sense of atmosphere and then it goes "aboogly-woogly-woo" and you jump out of your seat, because you are a 10 year-old girl. That's your Dead Spaces and Resident Evils.

I didn't even enjoy Amnesia that much, but that was a fucking horror game. Penumbra as well. Those games are light-years ahead of anything current in terms of horror and they play really well. Condemned was damn good, despite the fact that its last third derailed slightly from what it had built. I even liked FEAR as a horror game, because it did things much better than its successor. If you're going to play something that's even remotely horror-themed, at the very least think about what it's doing to have that horror show through. If you're going to label stuff, label it properly. FEAR 2 is a "startling" game, although I'd argue it doesn't even deserve that.

Horror is defined by the atmosphere and not by how many times it startles you, that's correct.

The density of that pervasive atmosphere doesn't always have to be on an absolute high.

Parading gore-infested monsters isn't exactly new to the genre... It's common in Japanese horror, like Silent Hill.

And how did exactly did FEAR 2 fail to have it's horror shown through? It did, you just weren't satisfied with it.

You claim FEAR is a horror game, but its direct sequel, FEAR 2, is not. Why's that? Its "tactics" and formula are damn near identical to the original.

FEAR 2 can properly be labeled a horror game. What exactly did it do so wrong that it's basically been singled out of the pack?

Of course it isn't. It's rather unlikely that you won't find it in the genre. However, SH as a series (the second game, in particular) takes the concept of monsters and it gives it purpose. It elevates it to where the games wouldn't be possible without it. It's all highly symbolic and pretentious to a certain extent, I can't help but admit, but that's precisely what makes it great. What is every other monster in any given horror game? A mere prop you have to shoot or cut through with little consequence or thought. It's all face-value, if you will.

It did have its horror show through, it just wasn't very good. I don't expect every other game to be SH2, I mean, that's unreasonable even for someone as hard to please as myself, but give me something to work with. FEAR did that, somewhat clumsily and predictably; don't think I hold it in high regard. The basic structure of the game was [shoot stuff]-[horror spooky intermission]-[shoot more stuff] and it kept going like that for the entire time, but it worked because it was balanced, in a sense, and those intermissions were genuinely good. I remember FEAR 2 as nothing more than a shooter with Alzheimer's; it kept forgetting about the horror aspect because it was too busy having you shoot through dozens of props. It was barely satisfying as a shooter and not at all as a horror game.
