There's a reason why back in the bows swords and horseback days, they fought with large numbers all at once, because any prolonged fighting is bad on an invading force unless they have a constant number of soldiers, food, and supplies coming, and back then it was impossible to have year long occupations on foreign soil, look what happened to Alexander, he was too far from home any supplies he acquired was from conquest but without soldiers to occupy previously conquered areas then they would just fall from anyone who wants to take the mantle

In this day in age where we rely heavily on technology a sudden change would be disastrous to the world economy, naturally you'd want to invade the nearest person but without airplanes and logistics there's no point
