The manga was promising, I read quite a bit of it. I stopped when I heard it was getting an anime, but then proceeded to not follow either. Disaster happened, apparently.

I'm not sure that's the case. MAL isn't to be trusted in most circumstances, but the manga's still rated quite highly and it's not just a couple hundred people. I think what happened with the anime was a combination of rushing the crap out it as well as screwing up things on a more basic level.
