Better shows than Psycho Pass have aired in the interim.

Better shows than Psycho Pass are even airing right now (certainly better than the second season), even by your inflexible standards.

Psycho Pass just passes your narrow, mainly visual check best.

It's a Sci-Fi Police show by I.G., but it's no SAC and it never will be, incidentally Ghost in the Shell: Arise isn't either.

Well, science fiction will always hold a special place in my world. It's not the be-all, end-all, just means that it will get a second look. The seinen genre i've grown more attracted to over the years, but it's no free-pass either. I think the shounen genre can still amaze me (after all, E7 was shounen and I still think it was fantastic), but I got jaded on shounen at some point and am careful about it. There are some genres that I just don't want to have anything to do with, like romance and slice of life. Those things simply don't interest me. I don't mind a relationship budding between two characters in a common struggle (Macross, Gundam, E7), and actually encourage it. But that can't be the whole-damn-show.

The types of stories that I like are the really big ones about society and humanity, though. That's what I like about GitS and Macross. Anything that uses it's genre to explore why society is the way it is, or what it could be is something that could be really cool.

I haven't even seen it myself yet, and you might have seen it already but it sounds like Ergo Proxy is what you're looking for.

Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) aired during the same season as Psycho-Pass. It's Science Fiction, seinen, there's some romance but it's not the focus. It's very much about society and humanity, does a much better job of building up its dystopic world/society than Psycho-Pass did. Takes place over 14 years with a couple of timeskips. It's pretty unique.

Elder God Iept-sama says Shinsekai Yori is science fantasy.
