aldnoah refers to the technology that an ancient 30,000 year old civilization left behind on mars, the current martians are just filthy colonists from earth who colonized mars in the 80s after they discovered the interplanetary gates on the moon in the 70s, the colonists found the relics and claimed independence.....earth was like "lol what? nope" and fighting for the gates on the moon happened, sometime during that the martians colony dropped the fuck out of earth in 1999, earth was like "oh shit" and blew up the gate on the moon causing part of the moon to blow up, causing meteors to crash on earth and fuck up tides, the knights, now stranded on earth, ceased hostilities and retreated back into orbit but they were stranded since the gates were destroyed they ended up fighting each other for 15 years cause they are dicks and cant agree on who should lead them

And there's a lot of talk about how it's kinda dumb that the military's incompetence is costing lives and overall making them look bad, while Inaho and a bunch of kids are coordinating tactics to take down the Knights with ease.
