Build a PC! Empty Re: Build a PC!

Post by FullArmageddon Sat Feb 25, 2012 5:45 pm

I built a new PC a couple months ago, literally days before hard drive prices sky-rocketed. When I bought my rig, the hard drive I got cost $110. Literally one week later, it cost $250.
Total build cost at the time: $1,357.89 (that's WITHOUT a graphics card. I'm using my old one for now, waiting for the nVidia 600 series.)

Here's the complete parts list:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=21581707

-16GB DDR3 1600 RAM (8-8-8-24)
-Intel Core i7-2600K
-1TB Western Digital Caviar Black SATA III HDD
-60GB SSD
(used for caching)
-GTX 280 FTW Edition
(waiting for nVidia 600 series)
-900W PSU

The little thing next to my PC is not another computer, it's a UPS.

I posted these in the GT forums, but this is what my room looked like when I put it together....

That cable management does look like a bitch, but at least you don't have to look at all the cables when you open it up. Mine is a mess.

Also, are we posting battle stations now?

It's the Corsair 600T. I just built a rig for a friend of mine and he got the white version, now I wish I did. :/
And once I get my new video card when the nVidia 600 series comes out, my build cost will actually be closer to $2,000. I'm currently using the card from my last build.

GhostCell wrote:I think full just finished building and said " fuck cable management, im going to bed"
lol, you're actually close. I tried to actually zip-tie everything nice and neatly, but then I just went "fuck cable management" and shoved all the cables in and forced the side-panel shut ;)
If you can't see it and it doesn't affect performance, then why bother? Adur

^I'd love to have an open desk like that so I could put up a second 23" monitor. I could do so many things with two monitors. Editing videos, working on papers and articles, or just playing games on one screen and watching videos on the other (TES games have a lot of downtime, besides I regularly have my TV on when I am playing PC games).

oh look at that i am thinking of picking up the same motherboard , so I was wandering what you thought about. I have heard that some people have had some issues with bent pins on the CPU socket. Kind of worried that if that happens to me that i will be out a ton of cash and don't want to deal with the hassle of dealing with ASUS less than stellar Customer Service.

Edit: Now that i think about it, this really shouldn't be an issue if you seat your CPU properly, hmmmm. anyways i still want to hear what you think

I absolutely love this motherboard. Tons of inputs, reliable, and future proof (compatible with Ivy Bridge once it comes out and also PCI 3.0 compatible).

I'll just copy/paste my review from Newegg:

Pros: It has everything I could ever want and it all works flawlessly. One of the main reasons I got this motherboard was because of all the inputs; Plenty of USB, eSATA, and dual gigabit LAN (which was also one of the reasons I got this mobo since I often bridge connections). With the Z68 chipset you get Intel Rapid Storage Technology, and it was a breeze to configure and greatly decreases the time it takes to boot and open apps. I also tried out the Bluetooth with my phone and it was super easy to set up and stream music. I also love the UEFI BIOS, very easy to set things up and tweak settings. The thing also looks great. I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the ASUS logo on the heat sink lights up blue (though if you have a large video card, it covers it up and makes it look like your video card has a LED backlight), the power button lights up red, and the reset button lights up green. It has everything you could ever want with a 1155 motherboard.

Cons: None. Can't find anything I don't like about it and there's been no problems with it after 6 weeks of moderate to heavy use.

Other Thoughts: I went with ASUS because I was so satisfied with their motherboard that I used in my last build from 2007 (ASUS P5N32-E SLI). It was my main computer for 4 years and for the last 3 of those years I kept it running 24/7 (only turned it off when I went out of town so it was running at least 340 days a year). I used it for everything from gaming to web browsing and I'm still using it now as a server and I've never had a problem with it. It was really a no-brainer to go with ASUS again.

One of the reason i was going for this board was for the IVY Bridge Compatibility, i have always bought AUSU boards but was just curious as to how people opinions on the board was. Oh and i don't know if you noticed but your review is a featured review at Newegg.com for this MB, just figured i would point that out.

:A>_>: Sweet!

Yeah, I'm a bit of an Asus fanboy when it comes to motherboards, and I'm a EVGA fanboy when it comes to video cards. I helped 3 of my friends build their own rigs, and I convinced all of them to buy an Asus board. From my experience, I just know Asus mobos to be very reliable.

Though I will say that when I was picking out my parts, I was very tempted to go with this ASRock motherboard. The main reasons I didn't get it was because I'd rather have more USB ports than the DVI/VGA connector since I use a dedicated graphics card, plus I liked Asus's UEFI BIOS much better. But from what I've read, ASRock also makes some very reliable boards.

My ASRock board is finicky. If I plug in my case fans to the mobo, my computer won't turn on. So yeah, my fans just run without any control.

That is most likely that you board is not getting enough power from your PSU which means either you need to get a PSU that is stronger that what you currently have or some of the rails(lines coming out of your PSU to the MB) in your current PSU are dead.

I have ASrock Pro 4. Be sure to keep the legs and the Motherboard from touching the actual case. It'll power.
