Yes, this has a strong story.
Never read or seem Slam Dunck, but someone compare the two on MAL.

I would say so.

I can't compare it to Slam Dunk, as I've yet to see/read it (although I've been meaning to, probably going with the manga version), but both the anime and manga rate highly, same as Slam Dunk.

This is part of what makes it seem like this is only the first half of the beginning, so to say.

The two who are likely to be the best of the five/six are obscured in the show poster and excluded from things like the ED. A girl is also mixed in with the shadows they show of the Generation of Miracles in the OP who I'm guessing was some kind of manager/assistant-coach that was a big part of their coordination. I'd like to see her as a sort of opponent to Riko (the teams coach).

They all laughed at the "otou-san" one in episode 6, which I just watched. I rofl'd so hard. Not to mention the one with the steak and panda...just amazing.
